Chairish (what?) Roundup, plus other cool stuff

All summer long, doctor and dentist were scrawled across the middle of my to do list, but did I do anything about it? Of course not. I’m really lazy about life’s maintenance tasks. When I finally got around to calling, all their summer appointments were booked. So now school’s started and here I am taking all the kids out of class for one appointment after another. (I counted, and between all their doctor and dentist visits, as well as my own, that’s nine appointments per year—and that’s when we’re well!)

So all this is to say that I’ve been reading a lot of magazines lately. Waiting, waiting, and waiting some more. And in a recent issue of O (did you see how cute Oprah was with her giant hair recently?), my Craigslist-loving antennae perked up when I read about a new online company called Chairish.

Chairish is like a fancy Craigslist: nicer stuff, higher prices, and much better pictures. And there’s a middle man, or woman and man, to be specific, which means a) you don’t have to worry about the small chance you might be murdered, and b) you can have your purchases shipped to you.

All in all, pretty great, except for one big downside (well, two, if you consider getting Madonna’s “Cherish” stuck in your head to be a downside): the shipping costs are pretty high. It’s understandable, but still painful. I priced out shipping on a couple of things and the shipping was almost as much as the item itself.

However, if you live in the Bay Area, you are one happy vintage shopper, because a lot of their items have free pickup in San Francisco. Sigh.

Here are a few of my favorites. See the text below for links and prices.

carved wood headboard ($450), green velvet sofa ($1,150), ikat silk pillows ($90), Indian wool and felt bedcover ($140), gold flecked glass bowl ($55), art nouveau style wooden desk ($449), antique wooden buffet cabinet ($1,100), vintage pine baker’s table ($720), Turkish Corum kilim rug ($805), zinc top farm table ($1,620), antique pine farm table ($649)

Back in Austin, the big auction featuring Richard Garriott items is happening tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. at Austin Auction. Today until 5:00 p.m. is the inspection, or you can go early to the auction. (Last week I called it the viewing—but I think that’s what you do at a funeral. Oops!)

I highlighted a few of my favorites last week. These items still do not have any bids! (You’ll have to click on last week’s post for the prices and links.)

And finally, another Austin hook up: Four Hands is having one of their famed warehouse sales this weekend. I haven’t been to one in a while, but when our house was half empty I went pretty regularly. You never know what you’ll find!

That’s all I have for now. I expect I’ll do a traditional Craigslist Roundup again next week. As always, please send me any questions or feedback you have!

Happy hunting!
